The Best Office-Appropriate Sneakers for Women

The iconic scene of Melanie Griffith hoofing it to her corporate job in sneakers and a skirt suit (and then changing out of them once she gets to her desk) in the 1988 classic “Working Girl” is an image we can hopefully enjoy nostalgically, but leave in the past. While dress codes in certain offices still remain pretty specific, most have embraced sneakers as an appropriate footwear to pair with otherwise stuffy tailoring and conservative skirts in 2026. With that said, it’s also important to set some ground rules: nothing explicitly sporty or exclusively for running, overtly chunky silhouettes might be a little too edgy for some conference rooms, and things that are too flashy with logos or branding should stay at home for weekend wear only. More streamlined silhouettes like suede retro joggers or straightforward leather low-tops are no-brainer options, and even more untraditional designs like ballet-or tae kwon do-inspired shapes, and even a loafer-sneaker hybrid, are all office-approved. All of the picks here are intended to accompany suiting (preferably on the baggier side if possible) and most dresses or skirts, but still let the office dress code be the boss when it comes to what feels most comfortable for the intended audience.

Adidas

Handball Spezial Loafer

Half-sneaker, half-loafer, this Adidas pair is truly the best of both worlds. The cream suede is an elegant colorway that feels elevated with a suit for an important meeting, and it looks just as good with jeans and a sweater on casual days at the desk.

Keds

Champion Luxe Suede Lace-Up Sneakers

This subtly monochromatic take on this classic shape from Keds, in suede with a coordinating rubber sole and laces, blends so smoothly that it doesn’t really draw attention to the fact that they are indeed a sneaker. Double down on the coordination with a tan sweater and tan wool trousers or with navy separates for another very classic and polished look.

Classic Slip-On Made for the Makers Shoe

Vans

Classic Slip-On Made for the Makers Shoe

The timeless silhouette of a Vans slip-on gets a little more sophisticated when swapping leather for canvas, making it a bit more work-appropriate. Try them with baggy trousers and a baggy turtleneck sweater for a Phoebe Philo-inspired look.

Jitsu Veja X Baserange

BASERANGE

Jitsu Veja X Baserange

Eco-forward shoe line Veja collaborated with cult-favorite basics brand Baserange on a slim-fit sneaker made from recycled materials and Fair-trade rubber. This citron shade is the pop of color that can lift a baggy grey suit or a black shirt dress from “blah” to “bam!” with just a lace-up.

The Ivy Sneaker - Revelvet™ Evergreen

Rothy’s

The Ivy Sneaker – Revelvet™ Evergreen

Rothy’s, known for its polished recycled-plastic offerings, has a new slim retro jogger in its “re-velvet,” a softer material with luxe, 70s-feeling appeal, especially in the dark green color. Pro-tip? Use the green laces provided for a very sleek monochromatic vibe.

Tokyo Mary Jane Sneaker

adidas Originals

Tokyo Mary Jane Sneaker

Slim and dainty, these Mary Jane Adidas are the ballet flats of sneakers. In soft pastel satin, they read more feminine than sporty but are as functional and comfortable as a running shoe. Wear them as you would a ballet flat, with cigarette pants and a sweater or a printed chiffon skirt and an oversized button-down.

Center Low-Top Black/gum

P.F. Flyers

Center Low-Top Black/gum

Canvas is definitely more of a casual material for offices on the stuffier side, but this classic plimsoll shape from PF Flyers, especially in the contrasting black-and-natural-rubber sole colorway, is so iconic it becomes pretty chic. These with a black suit or khakis and a black sweater are preppy, polished, and totally cool for an office that appreciates that aesthetic.

100% Leather Everyday Sneaker in Black

Quince

100% Leather Everyday Sneaker in Black

Classic leather low-top lace-ups are the simple, comfort-forward sneaker that will replace the practicality of a loafer on long days with a similar vibe. These from Quince are a great quality at a great price, making them an instant “add-to-cart” pair.

Ballet Sneakers in Satin

J.Crew

Ballet Sneakers in Satin

Leave it to J.Crew to completely nail the office-to-off-duty sneaker in their ballet sneaker that’s 50 percent retro jogger, 50 percent satin ballet slipper, but 100 percent chic. The slim, fitted shape feels more elegant than a chunkier silhouette, especially in a sumptuous material like this polyester made to look like satin, but slightly more durable. The taupe shade is a neutral that will carry you far in a workwear wardrobe made up of dark colors.

Sneakers Samba Jane

adidas Originals

Sneakers Samba Jane

The cult following of the Adidas Samba has a new style to covet: the Samba Jane. Basically removing the lace-up top of the sneaker and replacing it with a single Mary Jane strap makes this timeless style less sneaker-y and therefore easier to sneak into a work wardrobe.

Cotton Canvas Sneaker

Polo Sport

Cotton Canvas Sneaker

Sometimes being understated can be the statement, and that’s exactly what this pair of Polo Ralph Lauren sneakers achieves. In simple canvas and a higher-cut, refined shape finished with rounded, monochromatic laces, they feel almost like an Oxford instead of a sneaker.

proenzaschouler,

Proenza Schouler

Arcadia Sneakers in Brushed Calf Suede

Proenza Schouler’s highly coveted Arcadia sneaker blends chocolate brown suede and leather seamlessly to create a harmonious monochromatic style that’s rich in texture. Wear with neutrals like grey, tan, and even black, or go full matchy-matchy with chocolate separates.

Replica Suede-Trimmed Leather Sneakers

Maison Margiela

Replica Suede-Trimmed Leather Sneakers

This pared-down, slim style from Margiela has a ballet-inspired shape but lacing that feels true to its sneaker form. This delicate pair looks narrow and sleek on the foot with a slightly avant-garde edge that the fashion house is known for.

Women's the Roger Advantage

On

Women’s the Roger Advantage

Slightly sportier than some office dress codes may allow, these uber-comfortable pairs from it-brand On are best for workplaces that push the wardrobe envelope a bit. In black leather, these chunky court sneakers would be great with all-black or dark navy to streamline the look.

Banana Republic, Tb. 91 Sneakers by Alohas

Banana Republic

Tb. 91 Sneakers by Alohas

Burgundy is an underrated substitute for black or brown and is just as versatile, especially in a sneaker that’s meant for the office. This pair from Alohas will look great with cream trousers or a tan sweater dress for a put-together look that’s grounded in comfort and still sophisticated.

Women's Driver | Stone Suede-Touch

Thousand Fell

Women’s Driver | Stone Suede-Touch

Designed with circularity in mind, Thousand Fell is one of the most sustainable sneaker brands on the planet right now. These subtly sporty suede joggers in soft grey are made with recycled and bio materials, with intention behind every detail.

Yono Sneakers Cocoa Suede

Dolce Vita

Yono Sneakers Cocoa Suede

Dolce Vita’s take on the ballet sneaker trend veers closer to the ballet flat with a very fitted shape that shows a lot of skin. Because of the rubber sole and the stitched suede upper, this definitely pulls double duty as a sneaker too.

Intentionally Blank Sporty Ballet Sneakers

Intentionally Blank

Sporty Ballet Sneakers

Calling all minimalists: these sleek “sneakerinas” from Intentionally Blank are the work sneaker of your dreams. Slim and nonchalant, they read more feminine than sporty but are still super functional with a rubber sole and elastic straps over the top of the foot.

bloomingdales,

Tory Burch

Ballerina Sneaker

Tory Burch’s spin on the ballerina sneaker blends nylon and suede in a navy-on-navy-on-navy way, from the shoe to the sole to the laces. The rounded toe and very flat sole read more like a desert boot than a sneaker, which makes them more office-friendly.
