Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow

Best for: Gilded Age estates and river views

Less than an hour’s drive from Manhattan, sister towns Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow offer one of the easiest entries into the Hudson Valley, with a mix of riverfront views, landmark estates, and enough dining and culture to fill an entire weekend. The headline attractions are worth your attention: Kykuit, the Rockefeller family’s hilltop estate, is one of the region’s most spectacular sights (open from May to December), while Lyndhurst Mansion brings sweeping Gothic Revival grandeur to the river’s edge. There’s also plenty of literary history woven throughout this special pocket, from Washington Irving’s riverside estate, Sunnyside, to the spooky yet alluring Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where winding roads, notable graves, and dramatic Hudson views continue to draw visitors nearly two centuries after The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was published.

When you’re done exploring the villages, head to scenic RiverWalk and waterfront parks for some of the Lower Hudson Valley’s most accessible river views, particularly around Kingsland Point Park and Horan’s Landing, where locals gather for sunset picnics and summer concerts. Fall may bring the crowds thanks to Halloween lore and seasonal events like the iconic Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, but the area’s appeal extends well beyond October.

Downtown Tarrytown is the ideal home base for a visit to the area, with a walkable main street dotted with cafés, boutiques, and independent shops. The dining scene punches well above its weight: Goosefeather draws diners for contemporary Cantonese cuisine inside the historic Tarrytown House Estate, and Horsefeathers remains a longtime favorite for burgers, sandwiches, and a kickin’ local crowd. For a dinner out on the town, the waterfront setting at Red Hat on the River is hard to beat, particularly for dining at sunset. Between meals, catch a performance at the historic Tarrytown Music Hall, or check out one of the many seasonal festivals, outdoor concerts, and cultural events.
