As a tried-and-true minimalist, I’ve learned that the simplest pieces are often the hardest working—and the easiest to get wrong. When a garment has nowhere to hide, the cut, fabric, proportion, and finish have to do all the talking, which is why I’m particularly discerning about the basics I bring into my wardrobe. A great white T-shirt, perfectly relaxed trousers, or a deceptively simple knit may not command attention on its own, but these pieces make everything else look better. I think of basics as the architecture of a wardrobe: get the foundation right, and getting dressed becomes infinitely easier. My rule is simple—if I’m going to wear something constantly, it deserves the same scrutiny as the statement pieces.

White T-shirts, great jeans, and impeccably tailored trousers are the quiet power players of my wardrobe—the pieces I return to precisely because they never feel overworked. A crisp white tee can temper an ornate skirt or slip effortlessly beneath double-breasted blazers (another essential to covet on repeat). Denim brings a necessary nonchalance to even the most considered look, and a beautifully cut trouser lends instant polish without veering corporate. Each of these pieces’ appeal lies in their neutrality; each acts as a sartorial blank canvas, leaving room for layering, experimentation, and texture play.

The White T-Shirt

Although simple in design, with copious amounts on the market to discover, finding the perfect white T-shirt is no easy venture. For me, a white tee needs to work harder than the others—it needs to be versatile, comfortable, washable, and layerable. These are the T-shirts that I’ve been wearing for years, throughout different seasons and life stages.

The Tank Top

The best white tank tops earn their place in a wardrobe by being endlessly adaptable—equally convincing beneath sharp tailoring, tucked into denim, or worn alone with a sweeping skirt a la Olsen twin style.

The Knitwear

Well-made knitwear does one thing well; it ages. A good sweater should be in your wardrobe for years, and these, from The Row to Banana Republic, have outlasted the others.

The Blue Jean + Black Trouser

Lived-in denim and tailored trousers occupy opposite ends of the sartorial spectrum, yet both possess the rare ability to anchor nearly anything you put above them. Denim, from Still Here and Agolde, lends an effortless ease, while a sharply cut trouser, like these from Uniqlo, form the backbone of a wardrobe built for real life and real work schedules.

The Button Down Shirt

Similarly to the Olsen twins, I rely heavily on my rotation of well-made button-down shirts. These cotton poplin’s provide endless wardrobe inspiration; whether they’re worn loosely over waistbands, with sweeping skirts, or tucked in neatly, and decorated with a belt.

The Sweatsuit

Now, the sweatsuit may not seem like a wardrobe essential to some, but for a working mom—they’re everything! Ideal for early morning playdates, drop off’s, and stroller walks in the city, these two sweatsuits have become my go-to for casual days when I still want to look put together. Add a loafer or ballet flat to juxtapose the laid-back vibe.

The Black Blazer

Fashion’s ultimate problem-solver is the black blazer, hands down. It’s capable of lending authority to denim, restraint to a slip dress, or polish to an otherwise off-duty look. The best versions rely on impeccable proportion and tailoring rather than novelty.

The Everyday Sneaker

An everyday sneaker should disappear seamlessly into your wardrobe while still lending a look a certain point of view. As a fashion editor living in New York, walkability is the most important, with stylishness as a close second. The Adidas Tokyo sneaker strikes that balance particularly well.

The Practical Tote

A tote bag has graduated from purely utilitarian to an essential part of the stylish, everyday uniform. Roomy canvas styles like Alex Mill’s Perfect tote and Kallmeyer’s minimal iteration have an appealingly unfussy quality, while The Row’s screams, “9 to 5, but dinner after!”
