Which Frozen Berries Were Recalled?
Publix recalled all lots of the following products:
- 10-ounce GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, UPC 41415-06453
- 48-ounce GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, UPC 41415-12053
- 10-ounce GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, UPC 41415-06753
- 48-ounce GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, UPC 41415-12153
The recalled products were sold at Publix locations in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Publix immediately pulled the products from shelves after being informed of the recall, and the berries remain unavailable for sale.
Do not eat the recalled berries. Throw them away or return them to Publix for a full refund. To lower your risk of food poisoning, wash any surfaces touched by recalled frozen berries with hot, soapy water.
How Does E. coli Make You Sick?
After eating food contaminated with Shiga toxin–producing E. coli, most people will develop severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. Symptoms of E. coli infection usually begin three to four days after a person eats contaminated food.
In vulnerable groups, including children younger than 5, adults older than 65, and people with weakened immune systems, E. coli infection can lead to a serious kidney complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can be fatal.
What to Do if You Ate Recalled Berries
Most people recover on their own from an E. coli infection within five to seven days. It’s important to stay hydrated during recovery.
If you believe you ate recalled berries and get sick, you should seek medical care if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 degrees F
- Diarrhea for more than three days that doesn’t get better
- Bloody diarrhea
- Vomiting so severe that you can’t keep liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, including not peeing much, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up
