Responsibility Is The New Medicine: Relooking Our Definition of Health

In a world where we’ve outsourced responsibility for our health, where burnout is normalized, less sleep and more grind are glorified, and pesticide-infused food is cheaper than organic (which, ironically, needs a label), it’s no wonder so many people are struggling – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

We’ve reached a point where our definition of “health” desperately needs to be reframed, because the current model isn’t serving us. It’s keeping us sick, tired, disconnected, and dependent on a broken system. A system  built on spoon-fed professionals who believe the information they receive is the only truth.

What is health?

Health is not just the absence of disease. It’s not a number on a scale or a short-term detox to undo months of stress. And it can’t be found in a pill. True health is vitality. It’s about energy, emotional resilience, clear thinking, strong relationships, and a deep presence in our body. But, mostly, it’s about taking full responsibility. It’s about empowerment, not management, and the way we approach it must evolve.

For too long, we’ve handed over our well-being to systems that treat symptoms instead of causes. We wait until something breaks before we act. But what if we reframed health as a daily practice of self-respect, a proactive relationship with our body, mind, and nervous system?

Practicing discernment

This isn’t about perfection or living in fear. It’s about tuning in. Becoming aware of what our body is saying and what we’re feeding our mind. How our diet (not only food, but also what we watch and what we listen to), breath, movement, and thoughts are affecting us. It’s about reclaiming ownership of our biology and our minds, and practicing discernment around the “normal” consumption of mind and body that we’ve been brainwashed into accepting.

For example, 75% of births in South Africa are via C-section. That’s not normal – nor is it natural. The average adult now spends over seven hours a day in front of a screen, according to a 2023 Nielsen report.

That’s more than 100 full days per year. And much of it is passive, binging Netflix and unconscious scrolling, which is linked to rising anxiety, poor sleep, and reduced focus – even limiting belief creation.

We have the tools. Science is catching up to what many traditional practices have always known: the body is an insanely perfect biological computer with the ability to heal from ANYTHING, if we just create the right environment.

This is what happens when we take responsibility

From breathwork and functional movement to reconnecting with nature, whole foods, and nervous-system regulation, there are dozens of accessible ways to start showing up differently for ourselves.

And here’s the most important part: when we take responsibility and change our habits, we don’t just shift our personal health; we shift our capacity to show up for our family, our work, and our passions, our relationships, and our communities. We become less reactive and more grounded, less distracted and more present. This is how real change ripples outwards.

Ask the right questions

Reframing health also means asking deeper questions: What is the real reason why I crave this or that? Why do I eat when I’m not hungry? Why am I exhausted by 3 pm? Why do I reach for my phone when I feel anxious? These patterns aren’t random. They’re signals, opportunities to realign.

It’s time we moved from coping to thriving, from treating health as a reaction to making it our foundation.

Yes, that may mean unlearning decades of habits, beliefs, and shortcuts, even diving into personal trauma. But what we gain in the process – clarity, vitality, freedom – is worth every step.

The bottom line

The world doesn’t need more quick fixes. We need more people who are awake and fully present in their body, people who feel strong, calm, and capable, and who understand that health isn’t a burden – it’s the gateway to a more powerful, joyful life. And it all starts with taking responsibility and reframing our habits, one conscious choice at a time.
