The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of 1.59 million dozen white and brown eggs after routine monitoring found they may be contaminated with salmonella, a type of bacteria that can cause serious stomach illness and may be fatal in vulnerable groups. The agency said so far there have been no reports of illness tied to this recall.

The distributor, Midwest Poultry Services, said all recalled eggs have. These eggs were available for purchase at the following locations:

  • Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana
  • Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi
  • Other smaller retail outlets

The eggs came in half-dozen and dozen-size cartons, 18-, 20- 24-, 30-, and 60-count packages, and larger bulk packages. Recalled eggs can be identified by the following details:

  • A Best By/Sell By date between July 20 and August 17, 2026
  • An identifying code number printed on the left or right sides of the carton, codes P-1950 or 0840962, with a Julian Date between 157 and 184.
A detailed list of recalled products can be found on the FDA’s website.

If you have recalled eggs, do not eat them. Throw them away or return them to the store for a refund. To lower your risk of illness, clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with recalled eggs with hot, soapy water.

How Can Salmonella Make You Sick?

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Infections caused by salmonella can be serious and potentially deadly for vulnerable groups, including young children, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of salmonella infection can start anywhere from six hours to six days after eating contaminated food. These symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea (which may be bloody)
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting

Food poisoning caused by salmonella usually lasts four to seven days. Dehydration is the biggest concern; drink plenty of clear fluids while you recover.

In severe cases, infection can spread from the intestines to the blood, which could lead to life-threatening complications without prompt treatment.

Most cases of salmonella poisoning get better on their own, but if you have a weakened immune system, or if your symptoms are severe, you should seek medical care.
